Dr. Shihab-Eldin, Director General of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) (2011-Present) and former Board Member, he was a former Acting Secretary General and Director of Research (2001-2006) of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). He is a fellow and advisor to a number of national and international institutions and corporations including Research Associate for Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, Board Member for SBC Energy Institute (formerly sponsored by Schlumberger) and King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC).
Earlier Dr. Shihab-Eldin served as Director of the Division for Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Department of Technical Co-operation, at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria (1999 – 2001); and Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology (Cairo) and as the UNESCO Representative in Egypt, Sudan, and Yemen (1992 – 1999). From 1976 to 1986 he was the Director General of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, serving concurrently (1976-1980) as vice Rector for Academic Affairs at Kuwait University. From 1970 to 1975 he worked as Research Physicist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA) and concurrently as Professor of Physics at Kuwait University.
Dr. Shihab-Eldin received all his degrees including a Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.
